Louis Gossett Jr. (1936-2024) won an Emmy for his role in the 1977 television mini series Roots as the fiddle-playing enslaved worker Fiddler, who is charged with the task of instructing the new enslaved field hand and lead character Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton). Both actors reappear as these characters in the 1988 television film Roots: The Gift.

In the 2016 remake of Roots, Fiddler was played by Forest Whitaker.
