Aspiring violinist who sacrifices his musical career for a more lucrative boxing gig in Clifford Odets' 1937 play Golden Boy]. He was played by Luther Adler in the original Broadway staging, John Garfield in a 1952 restaging, and Seth Numrich in a 2012 Broadway revival. When the play made the leap to film in 1939, William Holden jumpstarted his career by playing Joe.

In the 1964 musical version, where he was played by Sammy Davis Jr., Joe was a surgeon/boxer. Which, seeing as how we ain't the Cutlopedia Fakesurgica, is outside our purview.
