Singer from the 1974 movie Phantom of the Paradise, sorta. In the film, the fictional 1950s nostalgia greaser/rock 'n' roll band The Juicy Fruits sings the song "Goodbye, Eddie, Goodbye," about... a fictional singer named Eddie Mitty. Wow, meta!

In the song, Mitty is from Jersey City, with crummy parents and a sister named Mary Louise. Mitty is on the cusp of success, but his sister needs an expensive operation to live. He records an album, and deliberately commits suicide so the resulting publicity will send the album up the charts, and the profits will pay for his sister's operation.

It works. And America feels all weird inside.
