Finnish demigod of chants, songs and poetry. He used his magical voice to sink his rival Joukahainen into a bog by singing. Väinämöinen also made a magical kantele (a type of Finnish zither) from the jawbones of a giant pike he killed.

His first appearance in writing is in 1551. He is the central character in the Finnish national epic The Kalevala, first published in 1835.
