African-American singer from the comic strip Torchy Brown in "Dixie to Harlem" (1937-1938) by the first female African American cartoonist, Jackie Ormes. A sequel comic strip, Torchy in Heartbeats, ran from 1950-1954.
In the first series, Torchy leaves her small town to try her luck singing at the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York. In the second series, she is not a singer.
