In the book, the band has already disbanded when the title character, newspaper columnist Tamara Drewe, meets Swipe's former drummer and songwriter Ben Sergeant in a bar. By that time the music press is all over Swipe, following the rumor that Ben Sergeant left because his girlfriend, and Swipe's singer, Fran Redford had an affair with Swipe's bassist Steve Culley. Now single, Ben falls into the arms of Tamara and becomes his boyfriend. She writes her next column about him, using an alias for Ben.
