Pianist immortalized in the classic 1942 drama film Casablanca and the classic post-1942 misquote "Play It Again, Sam." Played by Dooley Wilson, who was actually a drummer (they dubbed in the piano from offscreen), his version of "As Time Goes By" serves as a musical motif in the film.

The film was based on an unproduced play titled Everybody Comes to Rick's by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison, where the character's name was "the Rabbit."

In the 1998 sequel/prequel novel As Time Goes By, by Michael Walsh, the character is given the last name of Waters.
