Kip and Myra break up, and Leila and Kip become an item, bonding over their lower class upbringings and swapping snappy patter like a 1930s film. But when Kip is out of town, Leila starts seeing wealthy Carolina tobacco heir Anthony Bardell. They jaunt off to Mexico City, but when she talks marriage, he flies off, leaving her stranded with only five measly bucks. She gets a job dancing in a "cheap dive" but when she won't give in to the manager's advances, he stiffs her. She gets sick, and is about to be kicked out of her hotel.
