Down and out opera singer from the 1937 novel Serenade by James McCain, who also wrote Mildred Pierce.

Sharp gets involved with a Mexican prostitute and slowly climbs out of the gutter back to fame, only to run into new problems.

The 1956 film Serenade was based on his novel. The protagonist was renamed Damon Vincenti and played by real opera star Mario Lanza.
