New opera singing star from the Manhunter story of comic book Police Comics #67 (June 1947). He's kidnapped by goons and a ransomed demanded of his boss, Signor Martez of the opera company.
But Varini is in on the whole thing. He arranged his own kidnapping for the $$$. Hero Manhunter tracks him and his goons down, beats them up, and delivers them to the cops. Presumably, Varini's career is ruined afterwards.
