Former pop star who converted to Islam and fell under the sway of "the exiled Imam" in Salman Rushdie's 1988 novel The Satanic Verses. The exiled Imam is a fairly thinly veiled fictionalization of the Ayatollah Khomeini, and Bilal is an equally thinly veiled version of Yusef Islam (aka Cat Stevens). In a weird case of fictional and real worlds colliding, Khomeini called for Rushdie's murder, a call famously supported by Islam/Stevens.
